That is, after the release of the Redstone 5 update. There are some whispers that the software titan is gearing up for a reorganization of the Windows team, to better align it with future strategy.
This is a team that has long been the backbone of the success Redmond has achieved, and a reorg here will significantly affect how the company does business.
But this is a shakeup that seems necessary.
More so, after the exit of Terry Myerson — the previous head of the Windows division.
Details about this reorganization were shared by Microsoft watcher Brad Sams, who reports that he is hearing talk of a bit of a shuffle up after the release of the latest version of Windows 10, codenamed Redstone 5, better known as the October 2018 Update.
The company has already announced what is the seventh major update to the OS, with Redmond expected to finalize a shipping build by next Friday, September 21.
A reorganization is set for right after that, and these are the plans in place:
“I’m also hearing from somebody who’s become quite reliable lately, there might be a re-org inside the Windows world after Redstone 5 ships. This might be actually how Terry Myerson eventually exits is after that’s done, and then his role is diminished. Just people moving about, just more product lines, like Azure and Office and maybe kind of thinning out the Windows crowd. I don’t think there’s gonna be layoffs, not trying to say that, but they’re going to be just shuffling some people around.”
Hmmm.
Just people moving about.
Although not unexpected, this latest effort seems more about giving greater emphasis to new technologies like the Microsoft Cloud, Microsoft 365, artificial intelligence and machine learning, alongside the operating platform.
But it is very much clear that the role of Windows is changing at Microsoft.
Perhaps gaining even more importance in some aspects, as the company aims to compete on multiple fronts? Perhaps no longer being the core business for the Redmond based technology giant? Perhaps something else entirely?
