Microsoft Officially Releases Windows 8.1 RTM

Well, what do you know! Even though Microsoft initially planned to release the RTM version of Windows 8.1 in October, it has changed its mind and officially released the OS update just now.

The RTM version of the operating system is now available on MSDN and TechNet.

Redmond claims that it heard and took into account the feedback from developers that delaying the release of this final build is a major setback — for all involved — and decided to make Windows 8.1 available a lot sooner.

Microsoft announced this in a blog post saying:

“We heard from you that our decision to not initially release Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2 RTM bits was a big challenge for our developer partners as they’re readying new Windows 8.1 apps and for IT professionals who are preparing for Windows 8.1 deployments.

We’ve listened, we value your partnership, and we are adjusting based on your feedback. As we refine our delivery schedules for a more rapid release cadence, we are working on the best way to support early releases to the various audiences within our ecosystem.”

The software titan also confirmed that final changes are still being made to Windows 8.1 before the operating system hits general availability stage. In fact, this was part of the reason why the company decided at first to not release the RTM versions to the public.

But we all know the various leaks that followed — at least now those that want to deploy the RTM build can get it straight from the official source.

Additionally, Microsoft has also released Windows Server 2012 R2 to users of MSDN and TechNet. Visual Studio 2013 RC is expected to join anytime now.

End users will, obviously get Windows 8.1 on October 18, while Windows 8 users will be able to download the upgrade from the Windows Store a day earlier.
