With the second generation Surface slates full and well out in the wild, Microsoft is gathering valuable data on any problems or issues that users report. The company has already found a couple.
And another one that was recently confirmed by Microsoft has got to do with overheating problems.
Redmond confirmed that there are some overheating issues, but has also promised an official fix that could be released in comings weeks. No confirmation on whether the company wants to wait for the Patch Tuesday in December or roll out the solution earlier.
The overheating, it seems, only happens when a user is playing games with an Xbox controller connected with a USB port. Microsoft acknowledged the issue:
“Surface devices may dim the screen as thermal temperatures rise from extended, high CPU intensive activities– like gaming. In some scenarios this does not appear necessary. Our top priority is for customers to have the best possible experience on their Surface device.
We’re working on a tuning update that will remove this unnecessary dimming event. You can expect this update in an upcoming Windows Update package.”
Redmond also recommends users to leave the tablets to cool down for a little bit — after a gaming session, that is:
“In the meantime allow the Surface to cool down for a minute or so in order to return the screen to previous brightness levels.”
If the patch makes it to the December 2013 Patch Tuesday Updates cycle, then expect it to be delivered via Windows Update automatically. Either way, we should find out soon.
