The next-generation Kinect is set to play a vital role for Redmond’s next-generation console, the Xbox One, once it is released later this year. But Kinect 2 also holds central significance for the Windows platform.

Microsoft has recently confirmed that it will deliver a new generation Kinect for Windows sensor in 2014, which looks all set to provide dramatically better sensitivity.

It is this enhanced sensitivity that will result in deeply improved capabilities according to Bob Heddle, the director of Kinect for Windows at Microsoft:

“We are continuing our commitment to equipping businesses and organizations with the latest natural technology from Microsoft so that they, in turn, can develop and deploy innovative touch-free applications for their businesses and customers.

A new Kinect for Windows sensor and software development kit (SDK) are core to that commitment.”

The new Kinect sensors, both for the Xbox One and Windows are built on a shared set of technologies that are said to bring opportunities for transforming games and entertainment. But for the Windows platform, this will open up new horizons for modern computing experiences.

According to Microsoft, the intuitive responsiveness and defined precision that the new platform provides will pave way for accelerated development of voice and gesture experiences on computers.

Bob concluded the blog post with an exciting promise:

“A new Kinect for Windows era is coming: an era of unprecedented responsiveness and precision.”

The redesigned Kinect sensor features a full 1920 by 1080 RGB camera along with improved infrared sensors and voice controls. This is something that it hopes will lead to the new Kinect for Windows finding greater acceptance in home consumer and business usage.

  • Kinect for windows is the logical move as a lot of people complained they don’t want to touch their laptop/desktop screens. Besides, a lot of people are still using their old monitor without touch screen. Kinect for Windows will solve all these problems. But I don’t really want such a huge kinect sensor sitting on my desk.
