Microsoft is planning to substantially refresh visual elements of Windows 10.

One of the upcoming feature updates for Windows 10 will introduce a Start Menu redesign.

Microsoft recently showed off a clip on the official Microsoft Design Twitter account that highlights the evolution of the Windows 10 Start Menu from the very beginning.

The interesting part about the clip is that it apparently shows the coming evolution of the Start Menu.

Some notable changes include a wider application listing and changes to tiles such as the omission of titles for medium sized ones.

Interesting times.

What do you think about the redesigned Start Menu?

  • Does not appear to be very interesting. Why change when it is working. If this happens I may go and try Start Menu X to see how it works..

  • Looks real cool. But its going to be a mistake to get rid of text labels for icons. You have no idea how difficult it is to describe something to someone when there is no label for them to read. As long as text labels are toggle-able, I’m happy. As for all the padding, hopefully its configurable or else it’ll really suck for low res displays.

  • Microsoft likes going from bad to worse and it continues here. They should talk to real uses not just themselves.

      • can you say everything??? You have blocks that change which is very annoying and distracting. Then you have to know what each and every block does. and you are accessed to some thing you dont even want, like if you have a news block on it , the news block goes to the disgraced CNN, I would rather it go to MSNBC before CNN and I absolutely LOATHE MSNBC. And no I dont want it going to Fox either. I guess I am sort of anal. Windows 7 was the perfect set up, so why screw with something that worked?

      • What is to LIKE? Thats the real question rather. Windows has been messing up for ages now. Just look at Visual Studio if you want a prime example. I mean really, menus in ALL CAPS for instance? No, Im using my Win 7 look and feel of teh start menu on Win 10. I dont need news blocks and weather and sales on my start menu, I just dont need it!

  • I dont like it at all. In fact I bought a program called “Start is back” and installed it and made my computer’s GUI look like windows 7.

  • Hello, like the most, I use the classic menu.
Also block automatic update, because when I have a very long process running, who can not be interrupted, I do not want to loose all my work,

    Who knew?

  • I must be one of the few that doesn’t mind …. or one of the few posting that. Dealing with tech support software issues all the time, maybe I get that sometimes you just have to work with the new stuff and keep moving forward. I don’t spend a lot of time in the start up menus, so as long as the things I do work, I’m ok. I only see a few tiles become moving images – such as my “pictures” tile, but that’s to be expected. If someone can mention something that is specifically wrong with it, I would look at that issue more closely.

  • Firstly I very much like current Win10 start menu. I cannot understand people still waffling on about Win7. I loved Win7 liked Win8.1 and find Win10 to be the best MS OS EVER. It’s start menu UI can be used almost the same as Win7 with a slight mental adjustment, so adjust, or as a Win8 tile start. Many of the more obscure Windows features, and some not obscure, are vastly easier to access in Win10. Task Manager is a prime example, pressing CTRL/ALT/DEL to be able to start Task Manager was an absolute travesty, also in Win10 it can be pinned to the Start for one click access, same with Device Manager, Process Manager and Disk Manager etc, even though access to the last 2 is so minimal one would not pin to start. Apart from the improved UI it also offers a vastly faster Boot and operational processing than Win7, and is at least as stable as Win7, in my experience more so.

Secondly my first impression of the update is I prefer the current Start Menu, the reasons being (a) I would prefer to be able to switch between Win7 Program List style and Win8 Tile style as presently can, and (b) The visual appearance of the Tiles make it harder to see what they are associated with, this will probably resolve itself with familiarity. HOWEVER this is such a fleeting glimpse that no first impression should be cemented into opinion, this will guarantee that one will not like it regardless of how good or bad it may be.This inability or simple refusal to accept and explore changes and adaptations is what leads to the perceived inferiority of Win10 start menu

  • So much space on the screen and texts with 8px fonts… These people at Microsoft are really dumb!
