Silence. Microsoft still has not confirmed that support for ARM64 is coming to the Windows 10 SDK, for the UWP apps, even as Windows on ARM based PCs are just a few months away.
As the company, very recently, assured.
These devices, running ARM based processors, can run x86 apps just fine, and come with support for the ARM64 flavor of the operating system. This naturally led to the assumption that developers will actually be able to compile a UWP app in ARM64 that would run better than an x86 program.
And even an ARM32 app.
But as Kevin Gallo of Microsoft revealed at a Community Standup, while discussing the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update SDK, and other things that are on the horizon, the company has nothing on the table right now for ARM64 support for UWP applications:
“We have not announced support for that right now. It’s something we’re looking at and evaluating, but I have nothing to share right now.”
He basically had no answer when asked about it.
Of course, this is not to say that support is not coming, but one could be forgiven for thinking that Redmond might have been at a somewhat more advanced stage right now on that end.
We’ll just have to wait and see how this one pans out.
Because really, at this time, Microsoft, ideally, would actually be accepting Windows Store submissions for ARM64 apps in order to build a diverse ecosystem of applications that can take advantage of the hardware and software that Windows running on ARM chips enables.
