If all goes according to plan, Microsoft will acquire Nokia’s devices and services unit by the first quarter of 2014, pending approval from shareholders and regulatory bodies.
And this means that Nokia’s illustrious Lumia brand name will come under Microsoft’s control in around half a year. The Windows Phone devices that the Finnish telecom giant makes will soon fly out from the House of Windows.
The biggest question that remains throughout all this is how Microsoft plans to tackle the Lumia brand name, considering the kind of traction it has been getting both in the US and other important markets around the globe.
Redmond, can obviously, choose the Lumia name for its own Windows Phone devices, or it can come up and use something entirely different.
Chris Weber, Nokia’s sales and marketing head, however believes that some kind of a change is in the air. In an in-house interview posted on the official Nokia blog, the senior executive claims:
“On smartphones, it’s more complicated and we’ll be seeking to create a unified brand across Lumia and other Windows-based devices. But we’re still a long way from when that decision has to be made.”
What this means is that Microsoft prefers having the same brand name for all its Windows hardware products — from smartphones to the Surface tablets. What the final name will be is anybody’s guess, and needless to say this is not an entirely easy decision to make.
Weber does, however, state that Redmond will keep the Nokia and Asha brand name for the affordable and feature phones that Nokia sells in developing markets.
