Yesterday we reported that the Microsoft Surface RT was having problems with updating apps and the entire OS itself due to a possible firmware issue. Now Microsoft is working on a Windows RT fix for those affected by the issue.
Keep in mind that the problem has only been reported on Surface RT hardware and not all Windows RT devices. It is believed that the issue stems from the Surface firmware update that rolled out on January 8th’s Patch Tuesday, though there were also general Windows RT patches that day as well.
So when is the fix coming? According to Microsoft, they hope to have things resolved by early February. Here’s the official word:
“Some Windows RT customers who attempted to apply January’s bulletins had issues installing updates. Specifically, impacted Windows RT devices went into connected standby mode during the download of updates from Windows Update, causing the connection to be disrupted. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and are working to correct the issue; we expect to have a fix in place in the first week of February.”
From the sounds of it, the patch will be designed for installation on all Windows RT devices, even if the problem has only been reported by Surface users as this point.
So that pretty much sums things up. While it is never fun to have to deal with these issues in the first place, problems happen. The good news is that Microsoft is one of the most prompt companies out there when it comes to responding to bugs and other errors. They rarely deny it or blame it on the user (I’m talking about you Apple).
