Microsoft are looking to add Facial Recognition and detection to Windows 8 (no surprise there)
They are looking to add it to the login screen as an option that can be enabled in the control panel
Discussions are still ongoing about whether to support:
- >> Kinect
- >> Kinect 2
- >> Webcams (generic 3rd party inclusive)
- >> Microsoft specific webcams
It will (obviously) be tested thoroughly to avoid any embarrassing snafus
The decision about whether to green light this feature will be made closer to the end of they year.
They are also looking at it as a strategic feature for Enterprise (corporate) security.

hmm, i think it will and should be possible to use any decent webcam for this, although knowing Microsoft if the feature will be available you should be able to use any webcam, there will propably be a few which are recommended (i.e. works with windows 8 stickers), but it really should not make any difference. What I am wondering about is how (if) they will integrate kinect or kinect 2 into windows 8, i dont have one, but looking at images the kinect seems fairly large, and its not something I would like to have standing below my monitor, or anywhere on my desk, so we can expect kinect 2 to be a lot smaller.

I think that the Kinect cameras will be implemented in the monitors / displays. A Face recognition login is a simple step to the future, so I think that Microsoft will implement it.

Reminds me of an old Jetson cartoon about video messaging, where Jane Jetson had a cold all night and looked terrible in the morning so she put on a mask when a busybody friend was calling her by video so she was “presentable” … then she sneezed and her mask flew off and she showed her sickly face without makeup … her friend on the video started being snide about it until SHE sneezed and HER mask fell off revealing a sickly complexion as well … off tangent, but if we had masks to show a better face, how do we make sure people don’t use masks to fake our “facial recog logins?” … or the one scene from “Timecop” using eye recognition, and a criminal took the eyeball of a prison warden to fool the sensor and get away? Even in the movie “Get Smart” a criminal used fingerprint id on his computer, but Agent Smart “breathed” on it, exposing the last oily fingerprint and the computer “recognized” it as the owner’s and allowed login by an agent. Point is: no matter what steps are taken to protect logins and security intrusions, criminals (and others) will figure out ways around them.
