Nokia Lumia 920 variant with 41MP PureView Camera to be Announced at MWC 2013?

You might remember last year when Nokia rolled out the 808 PureView, a Symbian smartphone with a 41MP camera onboard. Many have been wondering when a similar product for the Windows Phone world might eventually surface.

Others wondered why the 808 PureView didn’t ditch Symbian for Windows Phone. Pretty simple: Symbian requires minimal hardware, and outside of the exceptional camera, the specs for the 808 were pretty low-end.

The good news is that the tech world moves fast, and with processors becoming continually faster and yet cheaper– the time for a Nokia Lumia running a 41MP camera could be soon. How soon? According to a rumor started by Flavio Pic on Twitter, it could be coming to Mobile World Congress 2013 and is currently under the codename of Project EOS.

The new 41MP PureView Camera wielding device will supposedly just be a special version of the Nokia Lumia 920, and Flavio also claims that Nokia will be launching as many as six new handsets (or variants of old ones, really) in the first half of this year.

As much as I like the idea of a Lumia 920 with such a high-end camera, don’t get your hopes up just yet. This is a rumor, and rumors come and go. Obviously it is possible for Nokia to make a 41MP camera and put it on a smartphone – since they’ve done it before – but you have to wonder if the timing is right.

Nokia is FINALLY getting a big hit with Windows Phone 8. Replacing the Lumia 920 with a massively superior version (camera-wise) so soon could actually anger early adopters of the standard 920 model. What do you think, would you like to see Nokia release a PureView 41MP variant of the Lumia 920 at MWC or do you think they should wait until the second half of 2013 before making such a move?

    • Yes you are. Nokia did this once before, just last year with the PureView 808 which had a 41MP camera and ran on Symbian OS.
