Brace for more Nokia tablet rumors. The Finnish telecommunication giant is pretty much unrivaled when it comes to gossip regarding the launch of a branded slate. But the buzz seems to be finally picking up.

A Windows RT device sporting the Nokia name allegedly showed up on a graphical benchmarking website earlier today. And now there is word that Nokia may be preparing to hold another major press event in New York City — one that may center on the introduction of a Windows slate.

WPCentral is writing that it received a tip that the press event will occur on September 26 and 27.

While the tipster did not say exactly what the Finnish telecom giant would reveal, but speculation is strong that a tablet introduction is looking more and more likely at this point.

The reason for this is the timing — hardware makers and PC vendors are expected to reveal their new products with Windows 8.1 already preinstalled. Microsoft has confirmed that it will have the RTM build of the new operating system ready and delivered to PC OEMs by late August.

Still, while there is no way to confirm or deny this rumor, the two day event appears to hold special significant for Nokia if it goes ahead according to plan.

Windows RT 8.1 is a definite improvement over the vanilla Windows RT, and Microsoft seems to have adequately polished its tablet oriented operating system. The desktop is still there, and probably will be until the release of true Metro versions of the Office suite of productivity applications.

But if there is a time for companies to try and innovate with Windows RT, it is now.
