If you thought Redmond was done with the concept of service packs for its products, think again. While Windows is now almost exclusively updated via Windows Update, other Microsoft products, particularly business solutions, occasionally receive service pack upgrades.
The company has just announced that it will release the first service pack for Office 2013 early next year, and it will be available free of charge to all users of its latest productivity suite.
And as service packs usually do, Office 2013 SP1 will bring feature updates and performance improvements to go with enhanced support for Windows 8.1. Users of Microsoft’s latest OS have reported some very minor bugs with Office applications, so hopefully these issues are fixed with SP1.
Chris Schneider, of the Office team at Microsoft announced the good news:
“I want to give you a quick heads up that early next year we’ll release Service Pack 1 (SP1) for the 2013 set of products including Office, SharePoint and Exchange. SP1 will deliver performance enhancements, feature updates and improve compatibility with Windows 8.1.
Of course if you’re an Office 365 customer, you’re always up to date with the latest versions of our products. We’ll have more details to share on all that is coming in SP1 and how customers can acquire it closer to availability.”
Microsoft is currently busy working on a completely touch based version of Office suite for tablet usage, and while the company has not actually provided any specific details or timeframe for the launch of this Modern version of Office, it is neat to see the traditional desktop version also getting attention.
Expect more information on Office 2013 SP1 in the next few months.
