If you thought Microsoft was done announcing exciting stuff after the Windows 10 event, then make way for more. Office 2016 has just gone official, the next full version of the productivity suite.

It has been in the news for months now, and even leaked out in beta form.

But the company has been testing this new version of Office internally, with help from a select few external partners. Leaked images show a familiar user interface, meaning the suite will not deviate too much from the current version in terms of design.

Though users can expect a range of new features and other such improvements.

In a post on the official Office blog, Microsoft said that they will have more to share on Office 16 in the coming months, with a confirmation that it will be made available in the second half of the year:

“Simultaneously, we are hard at work on the next release of the Office desktop suite that will be called Office 2016. (Unexpected, I know!) We will have more to share on Office 2016 in the coming months, but this suite will remain the comprehensive Office experience you’re long familiar with, best suited for a PC with keyboard and mouse.”

The company also shared a number of screenshots of the touch friendly versions of Office applications for Windows, and they look quite similar to their iOS and Android counterparts:

Which is to say, while lacking the complete feature set of the desktop applications, these modern apps come with most of the features that users need in order to create, edit and share their documents while on the go.

These are the apps that will eventually be preinstalled for free on phones and small tablets that are powered by Windows 10.
