We have the confirmation! It has taken nearly two years for Microsoft to add the OneDrive placeholders feature back in its operating system after it was removed in Windows 10.

But the company has announced that the Files On-Demand option will become generally available on October 17, very much alongside the Fall Creators Update that launches on the same day, along with the arrival of the Windows Mixed Reality headsets.

Quiet an important Tuesday for Redmond this, next month!

Of course, the company actually announced this feature for its cloud service at BUILD 2017 in May, and has been testing it with Windows Insiders since June.

As you would expect, this new option will now sync all files from your OneDrive, with certain files and folders that are stored on your hard drive. Thanks to this new functionality, users will be able to see more than 270 different file types.

Not just on the web, but also on the desktop — without having the actual application installed.

Along with Files On-Demand, the OneDrive team is also working on an improved UI that will allow users to see what has been shared with others via the new information pane. There are new user interface improvements for sharing options, standardized between Office Online, Windows and macOS.

Office 2016 will get this update in the coming months.

A couple other features round off this update, including the ability to allow external sharing with users that do not have a Microsoft account, as well as ZIP support, shared notifications between desktop and mobile, file restore for self-service recovery from mass deletes or ransomware attacks.

Oh, and updates to the mobile clients, too.

Told you there were a couple!
