Better late than never! Oracle has released version 7.0.0 Beta 1 of its VirtualBox virtualization software, bringing several major changes in terms of host OS support.

It has finally gained the ability to run Windows 11 as the host operating system.

The previous release, version 6.1.36, did not support Windows 11 hosts, though Microsoft’s latest has been supported as a guest since version 6.1.28. While the guest template was present, the planned TPM passthrough was not available in that version.

This major change was announced in the new version’s user manual (PDF), which clearly notes support for Windows 11 21H2.

Alongside Windows 11, the new VirtualBox 7.0 Beta 1 also gains support for a range of alternative operating platforms from the computing world. These include Apple’s macOS 11 (Big Sur) and macOS 12 (Monterey), Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and 22.04 LTS, and Debian 11 for Linux.

So, a pretty powerful release, as far as operating system support goes.

Of course, Oracle VM VirtualBox runs on a range of Windows versions as host operating systems, including 64-bit variants of Windows 8.1, Windows 10, and the newly supported Windows 11, alongside Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2, 2016, 2019, and 2022.

You can download the program, which is now the only professional-quality open-source virtualization solution available, below.
