Some new movements on the Microsoft CEO front. Earlier this week we found out that Ford’s Alan Mulally was no longer the top choice for the Redmond committee in charge of landing the new leader.

And now it seems that Microsoft is considering Qualcomm COO to take over from Steve Ballmer.

Steve Mollenkopf is the newest (illustrious) name to join the list of candidates that is speculated to include people like Alan Mulally, Stephen Elop, Satya Nadella and Tony Bates, among others.

Bloomberg is reporting that Microsoft is currently discussing things over with the Qualcomm COO, and he is reviewing the possibilities of taking charge of affairs at the helm of the technology titan.

However, the discussions are at an early stage right now, and it is not clear whether an agreement would be reached in time — Microsoft, rumors suggest, is keen on announcing a new CEO before the end of the year.

One thing Mollenkopf, 44, quite definitely brings is his expertise in the field.  There is speculation that the software titan now wants a CEO with more experience in IT. So while Alan Mulally does not exactly fit the bill here, the other remaining candidates do.

For the record, Steve Mollenkopf hasn’t yet commented on these reports.

  • Introduce a new CEO from outside will affect the loyalty of their own senior officials and will affect the morale as well. So, unless a company is really in bad shape, they normally won’t want an outsider to be their CEO.
