Qualcomm along with NVIDIA are two of the biggest hardware solutions provider for Windows on ARM architecture, and both companies are currently readying their high-end chipsets.
The anticipated Snapdragon 800 chipset is already finding itself on a number of devices, with several hardware makers announcing that it will be featured in their tablets and other mobile devices. And in a new press release today Qualcomm has announced that this chipset will also support Windows RT 8.1.
The high-end Snapdragon 800 is Qualcomm’s fastest ARM-based chip. It combines four Krait 400 CPUs (that run at frequencies up to 2.2GHz) with an Adreno 330 GPU and 3G/4G LTE radios.
This will make it the third chipset to support the Windows RT platform — after Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 and NVIDIA’s Tegra 3.
Along with the obvious speed improvements found in the Snapdragon 800’s CPU, GPU and memory units, the chip is said to be even more power efficient than the company’s previous generation offering.
The chipset has the capability to power displays with resolutions up to 2560 by 2048 pixels, along with native support for 4K video encoding and decoding. This should give Windows RT devices the ability to support high-resolution displays for the first time.
And as expected, not only does the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset features these aforementioned hardware performance improvements, it also brings support for new Windows RT 8.1 features and services that Microsoft has implemented in this upcoming version of its tablet oriented OS.
The second innings of Windows RT is something that is of real interest to a lot of consumers and hardware companies. Judging by how things are shaping up, Windows RT 8.1 devices could finally pack enough power under the hood with solutions like these.
