App scaling is something Microsoft, and Window users, have been struggling with since the days of Windows 8 at least. Limited support for high DPI screens has led to a number of problems.
The most prominent of which is that several Win32 programs are rendered incorrectly, and become a blurry mess. Regular updates have been rolled out to improve the situation with each new version of the operating system, but Windows 10 Redstone 4 brings what could be the most solid fix yet.
With the release of build 17063, Microsoft has introduced new options to fight blurry apps:
“In this flight we’ve made it easier for you to fix apps that become blurry if you dock/undock, RDP, or change display settings. Some desktop apps can become blurry in these scenarios. When this happens, you have to log out and back in to Windows to have these apps render properly. In this flight, you can turn on a feature that will enable these apps to be fixed simply by re-launching them.”
These can be found in the Advanced scaling section in the Display side of Settings.
And they allow the OS to automatically detect and fix applications that are blurry. In other words, Windows 10 tries different settings for blurry apps and then choose the one that looks best. This should ease up concerns of users that have high resolution displays, but were still using old software.
Additionally, the operating system now also displays a toast notification when a blurry app is detected, providing options to either fix or ignore them, or learn about how to address this problem.
Finally, there are also options to override global settings for each app by right-clicking on the EXE file.
A lot of good stuff here for owners of 4K and beyond monitors, and although a lot of work remains to be done in this regard, these are welcome changes.
