The latest report from AdDuplex shows the Nokia Lumia dominating the market for Windows Phone 8 smartphones globally.

AdDuplex is a cross-promotion network for Windows Phone and Windows 8 and collected data using 215 Windows Phone apps running AdDuplex SDK v.2.  They collected the data on January 3rd, 2013 so the analysis comes with standard caveats about its statistical reliability. Nevertheless, there are a few interesting findings.

First, Nokia-branded smartphones accounted for a whopping 74% of all Windows Phone 8 smartphones, with HTC and Samsung accounting for very small segments of the market. In addition, the high end models gained much ground in the last month.  AdDuplex reports that;

“Nokia Lumia 920 share more than doubled and left its predecessor behind. HTC 8X has raised from sub 1% to a healthy 3% mark. Most of this growth happened at the expense of the older models, but it’s interesting to note that Lumia 800 held its ground thanks, probably, to very aggressive pricing in many markets.”

Added to this breakdown is our previous article showing that sales of the Nokia Lumia line rose by more than 50% in the fourth quarter of 2012.  Nokia is in the unique position of being in partnership with Microsoft and benefiting from Microsoft’s own advertising of Windows Phone 8.  As the Windows Phone 8 market grows, they are therefore in prime position to benefit.

AdDuplex also notes that Windows Phone 8 device sales expanded as a proportion of the Windows Phone market in January.  They jumped from about 5% of Windows Phone devices in December to 19% in January, signifying a major shift in buying patterns from Windows Phone 7 to WP8.
