Samsung may be sitting at the top of the Smartphone Mountain, but the Korean company is reportedly planning to shift its focus on tablets in the years to come. The reason for this is because of increased competition in the handset sector.

The company is estimated to ship some 360 million smartphones in 2014 — a high, high figure, but apparently for a company the size of Samsung it is not. In fact, the company has reduced its estimates.

But tablets are one area where there still is potential for growth.

And according to a new report, Samsung is forecasting that it will end up selling around 42 million slates next year, and the reason for this optimism is many of the new products the company is working on.

One of which a 13.3-inch tablet that the latest hearsay suggests is a Windows RT and Android dual boot.

What we do know is that the company is working on a 12.2-inch slate, specifications of which have already been leaked online as it recently received Bluetooth certification. There is chance that this device will be unveiled at the MWC 2014 in Spain.

But the company seems to be targeting the professional business sector with these larger tablets, and a device with a 13.3-inch display form factor will pitch it against laptop and desktop device.

Microsoft has also been hard at work convincing companies to develop dual-boot solutions that offer its Windows RT 8.1 platform alongside Android. And while partners like Samsung have been reluctant in the past to develop standalone Windows RT devices, they may just hit gold with this new strategy.

File this under rumors for now, but it is worth keeping an eye on.
