Outgoing Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer had been talking about a devices and services strategy for a couple of years now, but it was only this summer when things kicked up a few gears at Redmond.
Not only did Ballmer made official his (early) retirement plans from the post, he also initiated the massive companywide reorganization process. And while the restructuring is currently underway, Ballmer is expected to depart the company as soon as a successor is found.
But as his retirement is getting close, the man has candidly opened up about a lot of things.
During a conference in Rome, Italy, for instance, Ballmer opined that Microsoft needed to avoid getting old and tired, and this reorganization plan is a way for the technology titan to start up once again. In fact, this starting up has now become vital for the long term success of the company.
The Telegraph has the following quote from Ballmer:
“We’re finding ourselves having to start up again. Unless you’re constantly inventing something new, you’re old and tired. Today we’re having to remake ourselves.”
However, when asked about the way the Windows Phone platform has performed in Italy (it managed to overtake iOS recently), Ballmer was not particularly enthusiastic, saying that he did not know how long it is going to last.
Anyway, these are some good, honest words from a true Microsoft man through and through.

To make an omelet you have to break some eggs. Right now Microsoft is breaking eggs and going back to the board on some of it’s recipes. People are making too big a deal of the shake ups at Microsoft. They need to reorganize, and they need update the way they do things. The only thing they could be doing that they’re not doing is maybe find a way to make the company a little more lean.
