Oh noes! Microsoft has acknowledged another issue with the Windows 10 May 2020 Update, one affecting the Storage Spaces feature in the operating system. And the company is here with a fix, too.
Storage issues are just about the worst kind of problems you can experience.
And this new bug has apparently been plaguing users running the latest version of the OS, whereby users are unable to create a storage pool using the Storage Spaces feature. The software titan updated its support document to confirm that it is investigating this issue.
It reads:
“Devices using Storage Spaces might have issues using or accessing their Storage Spaces after updating to Windows 10, version 2004 (the May 2020 Update) and Windows Server, version 2004. When using some configurations, partition for Storage Spaces might show as RAW in Disk Manager. We do not recommend running the chkdsk command on any device affected by this issue.”
Sounds severe!
For those of you that do rely on Storage Spaces, Redmond recommends that you mark the as read-only by following the steps outlined below.
- Open Start Menu.
- Search for PowerShell, right-click on it, and select Run as administrator.
- With the PowerShell dialog open on your screen, type the following command and hit the enter key: get-virtualdisk | ? WriteCacheSize -gt 0 | get-disk | set-disk -IsReadOnly $true.
That’s all you need to do to automatically set your Storage Spaces to read-only status.
You will no longer be able to write to them. Of course, your device will still be usable, and previously corrupted volumes should remain readable.
Alternatively, you can also roll back to a previous version of Windows 10 until Microsoft is here with a permanent fix for this scary little problem. As far as issues with this latest release go, this one is downright distressing, as user data is involved.
Here’s hoping Microsoft gets to the bottom of this.
And soon!
