Up until now Microsoft has been quite on the numbers for both Windows 8 and Surface tablets, leading to a ridiculous amount of speculation from analysts about the success of the company’s latest products.
Now, however, we have some latest numbers, straight from the proverbial horse’s mouth.
Tami Reller, Microsoft’s chief marketing officer and chief financial officer, shared some official numbers in an interview posted on the official Windows blog, while adding that Redmond is confident of more and more touch-enabled devices to be released in the coming months:
“We recently surpassed the 100 million licenses sold mark for Windows 8. This number includes Windows licenses that ship on a new tablet or PC, as well as upgrades to Windows 8. This is up from the 60 million license number we provided in January.
We’ve also seen the number of certified devices for Windows 8 and Windows RT grow to 2,400 devices, and we’re seeing more and more touch devices in the mix.”
Reller did not provide any information on Microsoft’s internal expectations for its new platform, and how these figures align with them, but we nevertheless have some updated numbers as far as the amount of Windows 8 licenses that are out in the wild.
Plus, the overall number of Windows 8 and Windows RT certified devices is at a healthy amount, and the near future could see these PCs and tablets invade store shelves.
For now though, the market share numbers are still slowly and steadily climbing. The latest data from Net Applications for the month of April 2013 revealed that Windows 8 is currently installed on more than 3.82 percent of PCs worldwide.
