here, Nadella, when asked by an attendee why Google’s project get so much attention in the media while Microsoft also invests in research very aggressively, the CEO had a witty answer:

“Look, it’s always good to learn from others who have done a better job of marketing themselves.”
The room, obviously, erupted in laughter, so much so that Nadella couldn’t even complete his answer. He did, however, explain that Microsoft invests in research projects to open up new opportunities inside the company, not necessarily to make headlines. Case in point the in-memory database business that Microsoft has created, which is now leading a $6 billion industry. Ultimately, marketing is still an important facet in this day and age — and more headlines never hurt anybody, particularly when they pertain to some new technological innovations.   • “Look, it’s always good to learn from others who have done a better job of marketing themselves.” Too, learn from others, too learn from the past, is a quality lacking in most humans. Proof? Just look at the world news or the comment section on any web site.

  • I agree with his premise to some degree, but I think a lot of the reason Google is successful is the same reason Microsoft is. They got into a highly specialized and expensive market and captured a first-mover advantage. For Microsoft, it was PCs. For Google, it was their search engine (google). When you have that going for you, it’s easy to market and add things from there, but Google has just been better at it recently.

    • 100% on the money. Perfectly said. On the other hand, I can see why nadella would say marketing is the reason for success.
