Announcement of the Week It was a long time coming, but Microsoft finally unveiled the anticipated next version of its mobile operating system, Windows Phone 8.1. Along with Cortana, the digital voice assistant. Along with two new hardware partners. Competitors take note, Windows Phone brings it.

Return of the Week

There are some that have been clamoring for this for more than two years now. And Microsoft has finally confirmed that the Start Menu will return in a future update to the operating system. Whether that is Windows 8.1 or Windows 9, no one can say for sure. But for some, it is the return of a king.

Move of the Week

This one is for the hardware partners. Microsoft has now made Windows free for manufacturers of devices 9-inch and under. What this means is that not only will be see many more tablets, hybrids and convertibles powered by Windows 8.1, many of them will offer 9 inches of glorious displays.

Admission of the Week

No matter which side of the fence you find yourself on the Start Menu and Start Screen debate, there is little room for denial that Microsoft should have eased the transition by giving users the choice. The company admitted that removing desktop Start from Windows 8 was like taking away a warm blanket.

Celebration of the Week

Whoa, 39 long years, 39 wonderful years! Microsoft will soon enter its fifth decade of existence, and the company celebrated its founding anniversary earlier this week on April 4. Founders Bill Gates and Paul Allen even gathered to recreate their classic photo. In vibrant color. Or Technicolor, for that matter.]]>

  • I can see that for some people, the start menu is a security blanket. Personally though, I like the Windows 8 without it. It is not a hindrance to me without.
