3. Name it. 4. Minimize OneNote. 5. Use this shortcut combination, Win Key + S, drag over the picture or text to be copied. 6. Maximixe OneNote. 7. Select Copy to Clipboard. 8. Paste the copy into your document. Note: One problem with this method is you have only one copied image at a time whereas in the regular Windows 8 each time you use Win + PrtScn a copy is stored in the a sub-folder called Screenshots in My Pictures folder. ]]>

You can take screenshots on Surface with the ‘Windows button + Volume down’ button combination. No need to use third party apps to take screenshots.
Just hold volume down and hit start button to capture screen. That is easier.
You can’t take screenshots of Metro-Style apps using this method. But as others mentioned, press the Windows Key plus Volume down to take a screenshot and save it to the “screenshot” folder.
Thanks folks for the tip! Seems I’ve got a way to go to get the full hang of Surface!
I was a bit premature in thanking the good folks for the tip. I’ve tired it as per the three replies and the damned keystrokes suggested don’t work. What a pain!!!!!
It’s quite ridiculous to explain this by using a large piece of software that could cost a lot of money (I love OneNote all the same). Windows has had a very simple tool called “Snipping Tool” since at least Windows 7, perhaps even earlier. It’s installed by default, just search for it. Using a Surface Pro you can even draw onto the image with a colored pen.
Thanks to the others for the volume button trick. Be careful, though. I believe that start+up vol turns on voice navigation/narration for the vision impaired. It can be turned off with some searching through the control panel.
