Why does Fox News hate Windows 8?

Fox News Windows 8 number 1
Now, I could go into detail about how badly it was written, how misleading it was, how wrong it was  but I won’t. I won’t because anyone in tech who reads that article will instantly recognize all those things. In addition, Ed Bott wrote a good rejoinder here so no need. Needless to say, the article was pretty weak. So surprise surprise, this afternoon, look what I saw: [caption id="attachment_7203" align="alignnone" width="590"]Fox News Windows 8 number 2 Fox News Windows 8 number 2[/caption] Hmm. Let’s take a look at this article and see what they point out. The three reasons they cite are:

Compatibility Headaches

First there are the usual complaints about compatibility issues. One striking piece of news: The tablet-style version of Windows 8 (called Metro) is going to pull a Steve Jobs and stubbornly refuse to work with Adobe’s Flash. Yes, the dominant way that consumers watch videos on the Internet will not function in the glitzy version Windows 8. It will work in a “classic” desktop version of Windows 8, but who wants that old software on their shiny new Windows tablet? Furthermore, you won’t be able to get any old application to work with the Metro version of Windows 8. Shunning the one feature that helped make Windows a near monopoly — just about every program worth having worked on it — Microsoft will switch to a gated community approach like that of Apple. Want a new app for your Windows Metro tablet? You’ll only be able to purchase it through the Microsoft Store. (We’ll see how well that model works against the iPad.)

A Whole New World

Annoying as these problems may be — and things may change before the final version is released — the biggest problem for Windows 8 is simply that the world may have passed it by. The last version of Windows was released in 2009. Since then, the iPad was introduced, TVs connected to the Internet have become commonplace, and smart phones have become the computers we use most. Not to mention the fact that more people have become accustomed to using their game consoles as Web browsers. Even the cybercriminals and hackers have begun turning away from desktop computers and Windows and begun to focus more on infecting Web sites and smartphones.

Microsoft’s Lost Clout

Back in the day, just the mere whiff of a rumor that Microsoft was going to release a new version of its OS would freeze the market. Companies would halt IT purchases. Consumers would stop upgrading or buying new applications. No one would buy hardware. All for fear that whatever was purchased today, wouldn’t work with the new version of Windows tomorrow. But we’re not in a holding pattern any more.
Ridiculous. I usually have the patience to break these down in detail but not today. I’ll be brief.
  • Yes, Flash may not make the cut – after Apple’s discipline on the issue, nobody really cares.
  • Your windows 7 apps will work in classic Windows 8 desktop mode. Metro is an option (or the desktop is an option depending how you look at it).
  • How do you respond to the “A whole new world” paragraph? It’s asinine. Of course things have changed – so?
  • Microsoft’s lost clout? —????
Here’s the bottom line. Fox News need to take their heads out of their asses and try and understand technology a little better. After attending the BUILD conference, i can tell you that there may be some challenges with Windows 8 (look for more on this on the site later) but  the nonsense in this article doesn’t even come close. It seems like there are 3 options here:
  • Not very capable technology writing
  • Inherent anti-Microsoft bias
  • Both of the above

  • About Microsoft Windows 8……I don’t have it on my computer yet, but plan to as soon as I recover from surgery…..and feel like getting on my computer for awhile…..so I can get the updates and whatever else I might need to do in order to change from Windows Vista to Windows 8. It seems Microsoft has a wonderful program here…..I hope it goes well regardless of bad publicity. I have always trusted Microsoft’s software and shall continue to do so! Thank for allowing me to write this.

  • I have the windows 8 developers preview and so far they work great with all of my programs and applications. I am not sure what FOX is talking about but I like Windows 8 although it takes getting used to. It happens with everything new. I remember when they came up with Microsoft Office 2007 and the ribbons. I was so confused and lost…but I would never want to go buck now that I know how to find everything on the ribbon.

You are just start the name calling as soon as your arguments are challenged. I have also never met a liberal who has an original thought that can back it up all you do is parrot what you are told to say!!!! I also find it funny how you always need to tell conservatives we are dumb and you are so smart, my experience is that if someone has to tell you how smart they are they usually are not very smart! One last thing how smart can you be if you cannot complete a sentence on your own with out the use of a teleprompter?

As of right now i dont think that windows 8 is all that amazing (since i dont have a touch screen and i probably dont know all of the new features with the exception of redesign). MS is doing the same thing with xbox 360 with kinect. I am curious how MS is going to appeal to the non touch screen users like me. I also can not wait for the Beta to come out so i can give some feedback.
Oh and also just wanted to say that fox news is stupid for not doing research and not writing in any particular understandable way. FOX NEWS FAILS!!!

  • Whilst I do agree that Fox New’s isnt very good, and that this article reads like it was written by a monkey in a zoo, I cant loose the feeling that Microsoft just isnt the innovative company it used to be. Before everyone would look at Microsoft for innovation and see what will be next, that’s entirely shifted to apple. They are now more powerful at controlling the market and directing it. I feel that although Windows 8 is nice and looks promising, it lacks on innovation. The only new major new feature is the Metro UI and a few other things, they are not anything that could not have been put onto Windows 7 as updates or optional extras. What Microsoft needs is a product which will revolutionize the way we use desktop computers. They have to become leaders and not continue to be a technological follower. So common Microsoft, Windows 8 is nice, but I want something that’s going to make my head spin!

  • I haven’t watched fox news in years but I also don’t watch MSNBC either. My main gripe with Microsoft is there inability to compete. Example, I just bought my first smartphone with an Android operating system and I find I really don’t miss Microsoft products at all. I wanted a windows phone originally but the lowest cost version was over $100.00. My android phone, $20.00! I’ve now switched everything over to Google but I’m still able to use IE8 and other Microsoft programs as needed. This is from someone that wanted to use MS Live and MS Office 7 together. I think all that Fox was trying to say is that Windows 8 will probably not be a must have upgrade. It makes me sick that Microsoft has let Apple and Google kick their butts in so many ways.

  • Onuora,
I have to question your interppretation of a Fox News because i have seen the articals and they are reprints of Cnet and Windows Secrets by they must get their tech information from other sources . And most of what i have seen that negative towarts Windows 8 are from the LA Times where the last article you listed originated .
I have been watching the Windows 8 developers conforence you sent and I can’t see where you could be possibly  treaten  by that news organization .
Are you being politically bias ? Maybe this is the fear the White House and the liberal establishment are projectig that you are getting a false expectation of Fox where if this was the case you should have that expectation from MSNBC, CNN and HNN the left of Fox because they have printed these same articles on there sites . I gheck all the magor cable news web sites tech section and cnet for reviews and information on Windows 8 .
I would like more to know when When Windows 8 beta will be released .

  • Fox seems to have issue, and not only with Microsoft. The truth of the matter is desktops will never die even if portables are becoming more popular, there is just still way to much that cannot be achieved with the computing power of modern hand held devices at this time. Microsoft has also, and in spite of its failings, built up a long list of loyal users, who for the most part will stick with the brand they know, love and trust. Current user of windows 7 will also automatically look to windows 8 as an improvement to a system they have come to love and respect, The biggest area of lost sales can therefor be attributed to younger users who are new consumers and who will ultimately make a lifelong choice based on their personal experiences with different systems and who will settle on the system best suited to their needs, in other words those that choose not to use Windows are will be the same type of person who in the past bypassed Microsoft for other marketed products anyway.

  • Face it, without offending everybody
here please… Your words come out as biased as FOX news… Second, I’m running
the developer copy, and after disabling the ridiculous Metro interface that
essentially takes you out of “Windows”, it’s a mirror copy of Windows
7 with square window edges like 95… The point is thus far, this offers
nothing to corporate America that their barely (maybe) just established error
free and feature packed Windows 7 PC’s don’t… Please, I am not Microsoft
bashing, for a small tablet or smart phone this is great, and practically a
necessity… However, for the bulk of corporate Americas PC’s and Laptops,
quite a different story… And as for the smaller companies, unless purchasing new
machines (which won’t happen if already as new as Windows 7) clearly aren’t buying
    Windows 8… Plain and simple… Thanks… 🙂

  • You’re full of shit.  Banning Flash, the most advanced and ubiquitous high-performance graphics and scripting platform for the web, forcing us to return to slow-ass JavaScript and do-nothing canvas, was a PERMANENT turn-off to Apple products for me and many others.  Until Apple supports Flash again, I will never own an iOS device.  Windows 8 may work well on a touch screen device with a dedicated windows/home button, but I can’t even find a way to get out of the control panel without using the keyboard’s window button or clicking the classing control panel option to get a windowed interface.  The new start menu overwhelms the screen in an overtly opaque way, and likewise, the full-screen apps are a step backwards about a decade, because they completely ruin the idea of multitasking; I mean for fuck’s sake, the OS is called WINDOWS for a reason…
