Microsoft may be mum about Windows 11, but the recently leaked build ahead of its formal announcement has set the world of computing on fire.

Not only has it provided us with a confirmation about where the Windows platform is heading in terms of design and usability, it also hides some references regarding the enhanced upgrade support that the Redmond based company is planning.

It has emerged that Windows 11 may be available as a free upgrade, not just for Windows 10 users but also for those running older versions of the OS like Windows 7 and 8.1.

Microsoft, of course, previously ran a similar free upgrade program for the current Windows 10. The idea behind it was simply to bring as many people as possible to its latest operating system and safely move users away from older platforms that were no longer supported by the company.

Something like this for Windows 11 makes sense for Microsoft.

Details about these plans have emerged over at XDA Developers via a few product configuration keys in the leaked Windows 11 build that carry titles of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. Interestingly, Windows 8is not part of the configuration keys, hinting these users may require an upgrade to Windows 8.1 first.

These keys could be an indication that the software giant is gearing up to bring Windows 11 as a free upgrade for users of its older operating systems.

If true, this could be a great way for initiate an upgrade drive towards the new OS.

It is unclear whether it will be available for older generation operating systems immediately or if Microsoft will take a different approach when it comes to the rollout and availability of its shiny new operating system.

Guess details like these are something that we will find straight from the company in due time.
