Search engines are pretty good at helping you find information on websites, but Microsoft asked – what about all the information contained within Word documents on your hard drive or stored in SkyDrive?
Today, it’s hard to find stuff and you probably have to use a number of different search tools to find what you’re looking for.
With the Search charm powered by Bing, Microsoft are saying that there’s a better way to find what you’re looking for, regardless of where it’s saved–you’ll quickly find it, whether it’s a document on your PC, photo on SkyDrive, app in the Store, or a website.
And you can take immediate action right from the results: play songs, start a conversation, view pictures, launch apps, open files, and browse sites.
Planning a trip to Paris? A quick search and you’ll see beautiful images, upcoming events in the city, and popular attractions. You can check the current weather and book a hotel.
Your itinerary and budget saved to your laptop are a tap or click away.
In Windows 8.1, desktop search is FULLY integrated with Bing.

Well, now I know why Microsoft did away with the Bing app: the integration of the Bing search charm. It’s done brilliantly, I might add … but with ads showing up within the results on the RTM coming soon, I’d say they are going to get an avalanche of negative feedback WAY more so than they have thus far.
It’s akin to buying a Chevy or Ford and before you can even put the car into gear, you have to sit through a minute long ad first, with no way to defeat it.
Two steps forward, one step back. Deep sigh!
Sorry…but no. Not no, but heck no. If I cannot disable this asinine “feature”, I will be reverting to Windows 7. Its that simple. I understand that as of now, you *can*, but I would not put it past Microsoft to take that ability away. If I want a web search, I’ll use a browser.
