“With Kobo, you can read on your Windows device anywhere, anytime. Download the Kobo app and browse from over 3.5 million free and affordable eBooks, comics and children’s books.” The app takes a few moments to load, but once in, you are treated to a bright and fresh interface with sign in options — you do need a Kobo account to use this client, though you get the ability to create one right within the application if you so desire. From there on you get access to the Kobo ebook shop, and can download free and commercial titles. This free app is not just breezy and better designed than the previous version, it also includes improved features like support for live tiles and enhanced automatic bookmark syncing regardless of the device. Speaking of which, it works on all Windows 8.1 devices, including those powered by Windows RT 8.1. Click here to check out Kobo on the Windows Store.]]>

  • If Microsoft plans on launching their own reader app, why would they allow Kobo to use their platform for their app? My guess is this is just temporary until Microsoft’s app is ready.

    • I think you’re on to something, Wayne! Another possibility is that Windows has no plans to make a reading app and it’s simply a rumor. Maybe they started the rumor to get Kobo to join for a cheaper deal. Who knows at this point. Interesting point either way.

  • Maybe this is Microsoft’s app and they just used Kobos infrastructure to build upon. Either way, I love reading apps, so this is good news for me.

  • What kind of free reading material is available on apps like this? Is it just news sources or do they offer some free books and cartoons as well.
