In line with its rich, rich legacy of software, Microsoft continues to create some of the best apps for the Windows platform. One of the newest apps to be unleashed by Redmond on the Windows Store, may just be among its very finest.

The beta version of Project Spark has been made available for download — users are required to request a beta key to start using the application.

Dubbed an interactive playground, this is a simple (yet very powerful) way of building interactive worlds, complete with stories and games. The creations are then shared with the community.

Take a look at this selection from the official description:

“Project Spark is a powerful, yet simple way to build and play your own worlds, stories, and games. Share all of your creations to a dynamic community, and play what the community makes. Project Spark brings creation to life and presents endless opportunities for play.”

The final version of the application will be made available in Spring 2014 for Windows 8.1, Xbox 360 and the Xbox One. Until then, you can indulge in the creation of your own worlds, use the creations of the others, while also finding out how a particular environment was created.

Considering the power on offer, you do need a fairly beefed up PC to use this app. PC, in the sense that this free app is not available for devices using ARM based processors.
