One can almost imagine the hustle and bustle at Redmond today. Microsoft has just launched Windows 8.1 on the Windows Store for Windows 8 users, and with it the company has also rolled out a major set of updates for the core apps.
This brings us one step closer to the official launch of the operating system tomorrow, October 18.
The company has updated pretty much all of the built in Metro apps — Finance, Travel, Sports, Video, Movie Moments, Reader, News, Skype, even Windows Alarms is in on this action. New versions of all these apps are now available for download via the Windows Store.
Those of you running Windows 8.1 will not have to do anything if your device is set to automatically install new releases.
Microsoft has also updated the Windows Store Live Tile, which now notifies users about the latest and greatest apps that are available on the Windows Store. This small change has been rumored for a while now, though the company has kept it secret until now.
But with the Windows Store (and Modern apps) now coming back into the spotlight with the release of Windows 8.1, this is a very welcome and handy change.
Both Windows 8.1 and these refreshed new apps available for download from the Windows Store, so if you wish to get in on these brand new enhancements, then there is no better time to make the move to Microsoft’s newest operating system.

Yep, about 2 am this morning I noticed the updates, which of course I installed. What surprised me the most was the Mail app.
