But we have not heard an official word from Redmond on this. And while it was rumored that Windows 8.1 Update 1 was on track for launch this March, it now seems that the company has decided to delay the unveiling — by a month. This new information comes from the reliable sources of Mary Jo Foley of ZDNet, who is reporting that Windows 8.1 Update 1 will only be available in April. Microsoft, it appears, still needs a little more time to work on some features for this new version of the operating system. However, OEM partners might still get in on the action in March, probably at a later date. Redmond wants to ship this new version to hardware partners so that they can install it on the devices that they are planning for release in spring. End users will only get Windows 8.1 Update 1 on April 8. Which, coincidentally, is the same date when Windows XP is due for retirement. All things considered, it certainly makes more sense for the software titan to release this new version in April, as this is also when the company will hold its BUILD developer conference in San Francisco.
