Gamers love their technology, and there is no bigger proof of this fact that than Steam, the world’s most popular PC gaming platform. The PC gaming community wants to extract every ounce of performance from their computers.

Windows 8, Microsoft’s newest operating system was an instant hit over at Steam.

The new platform has been a popular choice for gamers soon, and it started climbing the charts after launch late last year. So well admired is the OS that its 64-bit variant is now very close to overtaking the 32-bit flavor of Windows 7 — the world’s most popular operating system.

This is revealed in the latest statistics provided by Valve, for its Steam service.

Windows 7, unsurprisingly, continues to rule the roost, and is the number one operating system for this particular user base. It commands a market share of 53.55 percent.

Windows 8, on the other hand, has a combined share of 13.02 percent — an increase of 0.3 points from the previous month. But the 64-bit version of the operating system is significantly gaining new users, and looks set to soon overtake Windows 7 32-bit.

Currently the 64-bit version of Windows 8 is powering 12.24 percent of computers that have the Steam client installed. Windows 7 32-bit can actually be found on 12.71 percent, meaning a switch could be on in the next few weeks.
