I totally agree with the folks at PCPro.
This is one of the features that Windows 8 should have re: the software drivers on your system that require updating.
One of the most irritating things about wiping your OS and starting from scratch is the reinstallation of all your drivers.
While Windows Update does a reasonable job of hunting down common drivers, you’re all too often left hunting round for discs or downloads to get all your printers/cameras/MP3 players/graphics cards and so on back to full working order.
An online driver locker, where can you save a backup of your drivers and reinstall them once you’ve wiped the OS, would be a winner.
Having said that, Wouldn’t it be great if Windows 8 was a cloud based OS?
No driver worries anymore…

Doesnt anyone object to the social implications of cloud computing? Any business worth its salt is not going to give up the ability to control its data or computing environment. Even if you encrypt the data and all of the rest. Why would the individual? One of the biggest benefits of the PC movement over the last twenty years (ok, so its almost 30 🙂 ) was to empower the individual, unlock all of the data silos, etc. What does cloud computing do but fly squaring against all of the good that that provided?
Clean up the frustrations the average user has with the OS, remove some of the contrived complexities, make it more utility like, etc. but dont try to sell them the nanny state mentality that its just too hard to do “by yourself”. We have to demand ease of use along with full control. As Jefferson said, Computer Companies big enough to supply everything you need are big enough to take everything you have… or something like that… 🙂
