Whichever side of the fence you are on, it is hard to deny that apps are the most prominent addition to the Windows platform in recent memory. Windows 8 lives and breathes these modern apps.

In fact, Microsoft itself continues to bet big on the Metro UI of Windows 8, promising future improvements and enhancements to this new working environment. The upcoming Windows 8.1, codename Windows Blue is said to bring various advances to this modern user interface.

And when you think of Metro, you cannot discount the Metro apps.

This is the case over at Soluto. The firm has released its latest report based on data collected from computers worldwide running its software. And it reveals that Windows 8 users launch a Metro app 1.52 times a day.

The research firm explains in its May 2013 report:

“The data shows that while most people try the Windows Communications Apps, on average they are used less than once a day. Note that launching ANY of the 4 apps (Mail, People, Messaging and Calendar) counts as a use.

Therefore, the 4.4 uses per week (on average) of these Apps reflects the aggregated use of all 4 apps.”

Expectedly, the Metro UI seems to be a fair bit more successful among tablets owners. Users running Microsoft’s platform on slates actually open Metro apps 2.71 times a day on average — and this figure drops to 2.22 times for users on touchscreen laptops.

Interestingly, more than 60 percent of desktop users launch Metro apps less than once a day.

Currently, the communication apps included in the latest version of Microsoft Windows (Skype included) are among the most popular. They get at least 4.40 average uses every seven days. Windows Photos apps, Reader, Camera and Bing Weather follow with 1.59, 1.27, 0.61 and 0.70 average uses per week.

  • If the desktop tile is counted as 1 modern app, then 1.52 may not be a whole lot.
