tweet claims that the company preparing a freeware license for those running Windows 8.1. Prior rumors on the matter hinted that Windows 9 might be offered free to all those running a previous version of the operating system, XP, Vista and 7. Wzor, however, is only commenting on the possibility of this happening just for users that are already on Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 — the modern versions of the platform. Those who have purchased Windows 8 separately or with a new PC that comes with a preinstalled version of the operating system from the OEM will be able to get Windows 9 this way, while the standard cost of upgrading from older versions is set at $20. This, you may recall is in line with the offer that some Windows 7 users got at the launch of Windows 8 back in 2012. Still, we’ll file everything here under rumors, that is, until we have some official word from Microsoft on this. In any case, this is good news and will benefit fans and users of Windows.]]>

  • I’ve seen this speculation a lot. In my view, it depends on windows 9. If it’s a huge upgrade and vastly different, make people pay. But if it’s just minor updates to Windows 8, then make it free.

  • I think this is a great idea. Reward the people who are actually keeping up with the times. People need to go ahead and move to 8.1, so they can get used to Modern tiles being added to Windows.

  • This makes sense. Microsoft may do this to get everyone on the same level. This may make it easier for the company to move forward.

    • Exactly right. Your logic is the same logic that is coming out of Redmond right now. Microsoft needs their users to be more united instead of all interested in different OS.

      • It actually helps us all for the the majority of users to be at the same baseline. There are benefits to it that a lot of people just don’t get. But talking to most people is like talking to a brick wall because the only thing the understand is hate for Microsoft
