The Windows Phone 8 platform is finally seeing some intensified action on the apps front, with several third-party developers coding for the mobile operating system. Additionally, Nokia also comes up with exclusive applications for its Lumia range.

But through all this Redmond continues developing new apps for its mobile OS.

The folks over at Microsoft Research released the Blink photography app earlier this year that captures a quick burst of shots when a picture is taken with the smartphone camera, and then allows uses to choose the one that looks best.

Now Microsoft Research labs has released another app — called Network Speed Test. As the name gives away, this handy little app allows users to test their upload and download speeds, as well as packet loss, jitter and latency on their cellular and WiFi networks.

As the official description states:

“When you test a network connection using the App, certain characteristics of your device and the network connection will be sent to Microsoft to help improve our understanding of network quality and availability.

If you consent, we may also collect information about your location at the time of the test. The data we collect is not associated with you, and will not be used to identify or contact you or for other purposes like targeted marketing.”

One thing that immediately strikes when you open the app is the simple, clean and efficient interface. It provides easily understandable results, along with the history of all previous tests, allowing users to compare the results over time.

The app is available for download on the Windows Phone Store, for free, but you will obviously need a Windows Phone 8 handset to be able to install it.
