The initial release of Microsoft’s built-in PDF Reader app for Windows 8 received poor reception and scathing feedback from users. So much so that most of the reviews hovered between the one and two star range. Quite a sight, I tell you.

Microsoft itself on its official blog (somewhat casually) admitted that the first version of the app left a lot to be desired. Not often do you hear something like this from Redmond, but here it is:

“If you’ve been avoiding our free PDF Reader app for Windows Phone 8 because of its lackluster rating, it’s time to give it a second look. A new and improved version just landed in the Windows Phone Store that adds support for additional PDF formats and a range of handy capabilities, letting you work with, share, and manage PDF files more easily on your Windows Phone.”

Users can now manage PDFs in the history list — with an option to remove individual files or even clear the whole list if they need to. The app now also gets the ability to share PDF documents with others directly from the app by uploading them to their SkyDrive account.

Rounding up the updated feature set, this new revision also includes support for encrypted PDF files that are password protected as well as read-only PDF documents.

Version 1.1 of the PDF reader app for Windows Phone is available for download now. Fingers crossed this is the start of a regular update cycle that sees features added to not just this, but other in-house Microsoft apps — even on the Windows 8 platform.
