Word got out last week that Microsoft was gearing up to release new remote desktop apps for the iOS, Mac and Android platforms that would allow users to connect to Windows Server 2012 R2.

There was, however, no sign of a Windows Phone remote desktop app in that report.

And bang on target, the company has officially released these apps, allowing smartphone, tablet and Macintosh users of the world (well most of them) to access a Windows PC remotely, at no cost. The company had already released a Windows 8 app with similar functionality several months back.

The mobile apps make use of a rich multi-touch experience and offer Windows gesture support in a secure environment. Improved compression and bandwidth usage along with support for external monitors and projectors is also available.

Now all we need is a Windows Phone port, and all will be well with the technology world.

Come to think of it, there are a few decent third-party remote desktop apps available for the Windows Phone platform, but they are relatively expensive and hover around at around $10 to $15 a pop.

And not to mention they lack the overall quality and polish of an official solution. Microsoft actually developed a few good ones back in the Windows Mobile days, so fingers crossed we hear news on such an app for Windows Phone in the coming months.

For the time being you can find the iOS, Mac, and Android apps on their respective repositories.
