Windows To Go, a feature exclusively available in Windows 8 enterprise allows users to take the operating system with them wherever they go — on a USB mass storage device, of course.
It is a fully manageable corporate Windows 8 environment, allowing IT administrators to provide users with an imaged version of Windows 8 reflecting the corporate desktop.
All things considered, it is one of the best new features of Windows 8, and has received wide acclaim, equally the media and the enterprise sector. And the feature seems to be gaining more and more acceptance, with several businesses and establishments already embracing it.
The Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust in the United Kingdom has made a decision to deploy Windows To Go and forego purchasing new laptops. As Kathy Lanceley, the deputy CIO and head of ICT Operations noted:
“We originally thought the only solution was to provide staff with new laptops. However Microsoft’s Windows To Go solution provided a far more cost-effective and seamless solution that not only allowed our staff to successfully work remotely, but also proved very simple to roll out. The sticks cost us £50 each compared to £750 for a laptop”.
The organization had already tested the solution during the recently Olympic Games, and found Windows To Go as a much more affordable solution that allowed flexible working for its employees.
