Mobile phone vendors sure do have their eyes set on conquering the stars. 2013 proved to be the year of full HD smartphones as a number of smartphone makers embraced the 1920 by 1080 screen resolution for their mobile devices.
In fact, 1080p smartphones are now available on the market at almost all important price points.
But this was just another glorious milestone in the mobile arena — things are reportedly set to move one step ahead next year, as smartphone panel makers are said to be working hard on bringing WQXGA smartphones to store shelves.
First devices that sport this resolution are reportedly on track to be launched by 2014.
The WQXGA (Wide Quad Extended Graphics Array) is a 2560 by 1600 pixels resolution with an aspect ratio of 16:10. Mobile phone that are said to offer this astonishing resolution will feature 6-inch display panels with a nifty 500 pixels per inch (ppi) density.
While these devices will be capable of enhancing the user experience while on the go, it is nevertheless an astounding situation when you consider that laptop and desktop PC displays still struggle to offer anything higher than 1080p. Users that go beyond this resolution have to pony up a bag of cash.
No wonder the notebook and PC hardware industry is in such a slump — vendors have tried to stay in their comfort zone for far too long.
Anyway, coming back to the mobile arena, no vendor has yet confirmed plans to launch such a device. But if things go according to plan, expect big guns to jump in to offer this resolution on smartphones.
